Enhanced Rider Scheme
The DVSA Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS) is a recommended path to develop your riding skills and a stepping stone to Advanced Riding technics. Whether you :
want to check your riding standard
are returning to riding after a break
upgraded to a more powerful motorcycle
passed your test within the last two years
The syllabus sets out what can be covered during training, including the core and extra modules; and it all starts with an initial Assessment of typically 3 hours including a debrief.
If the Assessment shows that you do not need any more training, you’ll get a DVSA ERS certificate of competence straight away. If the Assessment shows that you need more training, you can then choose to progress with a training plan (full and half days available as necessary at prevailing rates) focused on those specific areas to develop your riding skills.
Once you successfully complete the scheme you’ll get a ‘DVSA Certificate of Competence’ which you can use to get discounts with most motorcycle insurers.
ERS is a strong stepping stone to prepare you for IAM's advanced motorcycle test or the ultimate advanced motorcycle test - the RoSPA Advanced Motorcycle Test (the highest standard in the UK).
Advanced Motorcycle Skills (AMS) are fully registered and certified by the DVSA to provide ERS training, examine and certify riders. All tuition is based on the ‘Motorcycle Roadcraft – The Police Riders Handbook’. Full details of the scheme can be found on the DVSA site here.
You’ll ride in different road and traffic conditions.
The ride will be long enough for your trainer to make a good assessment of your skills. For most people, this is 1 to 2 hours followed by a debrief of up to 1 hour.
You’ll be assessed on 7 core modules:
structured planned approach to riding
defensive riding and hazard awareness
progress and use of speed
overtaking and filtering
bends and corners
slow control
developing the correct rider attitude
If the assessment shows that you do not need any more training, you’ll receive a DVSA certificate of competence straight away.
If the assessment shows that you need more training, you can develop a training plan with your trainer.
The type of training depends on your needs and you will be offered all-day courses or shorter sessions.
Upon successfully completing the training, you’ll receive a DVSA certificate of competence.
You need to have a full motorcycle licence (A or A2) and have passed your test.
The scheme is suitable if you:
have passed your test within the last two years
are returning to riding after a break
are upgrading to a more powerful motorcycle
want to check your riding standard
After you’ve got a DVSA certificate of competence for the core modules, you can sign up for optional extra modules.
The extra modules available from Advanced Motorcycle Skills are:
Advanced level filtering
Carrying a pillion passenger or load
Effective braking techniques
Group riding
Motorways and dual carriageways
Riding abroad
